That's why many of them were optimistic when the McNeil Consumer Products division of drug maker Johnson & Johnson announced its "new" arthritis fighter -- an over-the-counter drug so effective that the Arthritis Foundation was endorsing it. In fact, according to a TV commercial featuring Julie Andrews, the Foundation had "helped to create new Arthritis Foundation Pain Reliever, for pain relief we can count on." What miracle drug did the Arthritis Foundation help create? What revolutionary pain reliever was McNeil offering to arthritis suffers around the country? The answer: the same old stuff that has filled drug store shelves for years -- aspirin, acetaminophen and ibuprofen. The same ingredients you can find in dozens of other "remedies" including Advil, Excedrin and Johnson & Johnsonmanufactured Tylenol. The only thing "new" about this particular drug was that the Arthritis Foundation was being paid a million dollars for the use of its name. Not all consumers were fooled. Not surprisingly, both McNeil and the Arthritis Foundation refused to admit any wrongdoing and insisted that the ads offered "an accurate portrayal of these products and their appropriate use in the treatment of arthritis, " according to the Arthritis Foundation. In some situations the tumor has already invaded one or more branches of the facial nerve. Every effort will be made to save all nerve branches. Temporary facial weakness occurs more frequently, and will usually resolve in days to weeks. 2. Bleeding or hematoma. In very rare situations, a need for blood products or a blood transfusion. You are encouraged to consult with your doctor if you are interested in this option. 3. Need for further and more aggressive surgery. For example, if it is found that lymph nodes adjacent to the gland are enlarged or infiltrated with cancer metastatic ; , a selective lymph node removal or dissection will be performed. This has been shown to improve survival. 4. Need for adjuvant therapy such as radiation therapy or chemotherapy. Some tumors are best treated by combined therapy such as surgery with postoperative radiation therapy. 5. Scarring, Loss of skin flaps with a poor cosmetic result, or asymmetry of the face from loss of tissue volume, or permanent numbness around the incision site. 7. Prolonged pain, impaired healing, and the need for prolonged hospitalization. 8. Recurrence of the tumor or failure to cure the tumor despite effective therapy. BEFORE SURGERY In most situations, the surgery is performed at either the hospital or the outpatient surgi-center. An anesthesiologist will monitor you throughout the procedure. Usually, the anesthesiologist will call the night before surgery to review the medical history. If they are unable to reach you the night before surgery, they will talk with you that morning. If your doctor has ordered preoperative laboratory studies, you should arrange to have these done several days in advance. You should not take aspirin, or any product containing aspirin, within 10 days of the date of your surgery. Cal manifestations include sore or scratchy throat, facial pressure, headache, cough, hoarseness, and, less often, malaise, chills, or feverishness.12 Sore throat tends to be the first symptom, and runny nose the most bothersome.13 Significant fever is very uncommon in adults and should suggest an alternative diagnosis. Infants and young children have fever more often and may show only mucus nasal discharge. Red, sometimes macerated nostrils and glassy nasal mucosa are also typically present, but examination is primarily useful to exclude other diagnoses. In adults, nasal symptoms usually peak on the second or third day and then gradually subside. Cough usually persists until the end of the first week but may be protracted in smokers. The median duration of HRV colds is 1 week, but up to one quarter last more than 2 weeks.13 Human rhinovirus infections are associated with a number of upper and lower respiratory tract complications in both children and adults. Viral respiratory tract infections are the most important predisposing factor to acute otitis media AOM ; . Viruses have been detected by culture or antigen assay in 11% to 41% of middle ear fluids from children with AOM, 14, 15 and HRV is found in up to 8% such fluids. The risk of death from a kidney biopsy is extremely low. You will be monitored closely for a few hours after the procedure to make sure no complications arise. Instructions for patients having a kidney biopsy Your physician will set up the appointment for your kidney biopsy and call you with the date and time. Please be sure to follow these instructions: 1. Initially, you will probably have less energy than you did before the surgery. It takes time for your body to heal and adjust to your new medications. Napping and pacing your activities are recommended to prevent placing a strain on your recovery. Exercise and Lifting Exercise has been shown to improve muscle tone, as well as the functioning of your heart and lungs. It also helps to reduce stress, and achieve and maintain ideal body weight. Exercise should be an important part of your life. It helps you return to your routine activities, and maintain overall improved health. When you first return home, we recommended that you exercise twice a day. Walk 15-20 minutes daily, and gradually increase time as tolerated. Since you are not permitted to lift objects heavier than 15 pounds until up to 12 weeks following surgery, you must curtail any heavy resistance training in exercise. As time passes, you may gradually resume.
